Farming
began in the area in the 1870's as the mining industry waned. Over
the years as the mines closed in 1944 and logging has declined, farming
has played a significant role in local economy, along with aggregate
extraction and tourism. There are currently about 45 farms operating in
the area, along with a number of hobby
farms.
