The Simpson
Copper Mine Shaft, a crucial piece of Canadian mining history, is located
right in the town of Bruce Mines, 40 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
The Bruce Mines, as they were collectively known, produced the first hard-rock
copper in Canada (and possibly North America) in 1847. Having been
restored to demonstrate copper mining of the 1800's, the Simpson Shaft
is open for guided tours during the summer months.
The Cornwall Industrial Heritage Partnership has been diligently working to
acquire World Heritage Site status for the Bruce Mines in order to recognize
"the historical, social and economic importance of Cornish hard-rock mining
and engineering" worldwide.
